What are lab-grown diamonds?

Unique Diamonds: The Malka Allure Cut

One of the most common questions couples have when shopping for an engagement ring is about the difference between natural and lab-grown diamonds. While the name may suggest that lab-grown diamonds are synthetic, this isn’t true. In fact, lab-grown diamonds are just as real as those that grow in the earth – and just as beautiful.

At Malka Diamonds, we’re proud to offer sun-grown diamonds! We work with LUSIX, the first company in the world to commercially grow exceptional gem-quality diamonds by harnessing only the power of the sun.

LUSIX is an Accredited Producer of Certified Sustainability Rated Diamond by SCS Global Services. Thanks to this partnership, our Malka Allure-Cut diamonds are certified as 100% solar-powered, significantly reducing emissions, and protecting the planet for future generations.

How are Malka Allure-Cut diamonds grown?

Earth-mined diamonds are formed underground over millions of years, while lab-grown diamonds can be formed over the course of just 6-10 weeks under controlled laboratory conditions. Diamonds grown in labs are most commonly created through two main processes: (1) high temperature, high pressure (HTHP), and (2), chemical vapor deposition (CVD).

While most lab-grown diamonds around the world are made using HTHP processes, Malka diamonds uses CVD. It’s this CVD process that allows us to achieve the highest level of refinement, size, and quality.

The CVD method involves placing a diamond sliver, called a plate, into a vacuum chamber and carefully injecting it with hydrocarbon gas, such as methane, and high-power microwave energy in order to break down the atomic bonds of the hydrocarbon gas. This separates the carbon atoms from the hydrogen atoms. The resulting free carbon then “rains” down on the diamond plates, vertically growing the diamond, atom by atom.

In essence, the CVD process allows us to grow diamonds from diamonds. By maintaining almost impossibly pure conditions throughout the process, we’re able to produce diamond crystals of incredible consistency and purity before they’re cut.

The 4 Cs of Diamonds

Unique Diamonds: The Malka Allure Cut

When you visit Malka Diamonds, you’ll have the chance to learn the characteristics of diamonds and what makes each individual gemstone special.

The following attributes – known as the “4 Cs” – are important in terms of the appearance and value of diamonds:

  • Carat – Carats measure the weight of a diamond; all else equal, the higher the carat weight of a diamond, the more valuable it is.
  • Color – With the notable exception of fancy-colored diamonds, the less color a diamond has, the more value it holds.
  • Clarity – Clarity refers to the quality of a diamond in relation to the number of inclusions and blemishes; diamonds with fewer imperfections are more rare and more expensive.
  • Cut – Although many people assume the cut of a diamond refers only to its shape (round, oval, pear, cushion, etc.), it actually describes how it interacts with light; we can think of cut in terms of the following characteristics:
  • Brilliance (the amount of light a diamond reflects)
  • Scintillations (the way a diamond sparkles)
  • Fire (how light travels through a diamond)
  •

    Types of unique diamonds

No one diamond is exactly like the next. That’s part of what makes choosing a diamond for (or with) your special someone such a magical and intimate process. That said, when most people think of diamonds, they picture a clear, white diamond in a traditional shape like an oval, round, or cushion diamond.

But unique, nontraditional diamonds have become increasingly popular in recent years, and it’s not hard to see why. Here are some characteristics that make a diamond truly unique:

    • Fancy-colored diamonds (blue, yellow, pink, gray, and more)
    • Uniquely shaped diamonds (pear, marquise, hex, elongated baguette, and more)
    • Salt-and-pepper diamonds
    • Vintage diamonds
